How to solve the problem with the calendar?

I just started learning PHP and decided to create an interesting calendar that will be introduced the day and month, and displays the day of the week (year 2016). For a long time to mess around with this problem and can't find a solution. At least tell me the direction in which to move in order to solve the problem or algorithm for its implementation.
