What functional should be at home server-router?

Hello!

Until this time stood a home server on Debian with Samba and the distribution of the Internet via masquerading. Also put the linux version of VirtualBox. At the moment there is a "mess" with me not satisfying functionality of Samba reads all the codecs, VirtualBox sometimes goes and resets the driver and many other problems. Decided to do a full setup to fix all the screw-UPS and do everything on the conscience. Advise how correctly to arrange all. Might make sense to share everything on the path, but then what better to use. Advise soft, also I will appreciate any suggestions on "ideal home server-router".

Solution
use Miktotik + ESXi
Features:
Mikrotik
dual wan Internet (primary channel + reserve) auto-switch,etc.,
port forwarding, VPN tunnels to the outside, the distribution of the Internet.
Vmci inside a hypervisor:
1 torrenticola
is transmission + samba
2 Archive
inside the new path prosrochena as the entire device is a PCI Board with USB inserted where two external 2TB HDD
Assembled in a mirrored RAID using mdadm, there is a collection of music, photos, and so on.
Soft - Owncloud, Subsonic, SVN, samba
3 Monitoring costs for many years cacti, to monitor my personal projects. - now I would put observium or zabbix3

That you have to ask.
Who besides you knows what you need.

Samba doesn't read all codecs
Samba do codecs not reading, no, because this software package supports the use of SMB.
