How to write the filesystem after dd?

After attempting to make a bootable USB flash drive by means of dd the file system has gone nowhere, and my laptop does not understand USB flash drive after that.

Most likely you do not go down the way: /dev/sdb1 (for example) instead of /dev/sdb
