How IoC containers work?

Do I understand correctly that the ioc container is an object that when you start the application instantiates all of the objects previously registered by using the help of a string key and calback functions or closures?

Almost. Only the container is part of such system, it keeps the dependencies.

Look at the simplest example: pimple.sensiolabs.org
