BAD sector is not a "dead sector" in the literal sense. This sector, access to which, the information is read, a huge delay/no response. But the reasons for this phenomenon (especially in your case when 99% of faults) can be different, down to the banal damaged SATA cable or the old software that can not work with the new equipment (suspended).

But if you are willing to take the risk, first consider the information in a way that is, sector-by-sector copy of the entire HDD (although in your case perhaps it will give nothing). If you're lucky, and the screw is not completely denied during this procedure, you will have almost all the contents of the screw, even if it is damaged. Then connecting/expanding the image (copy) of the virtual machine at will without the risk of trying to get the remaining information. Even in case of failure because of your actions with this or that software recovery, you can always make a new copy of the image and try again.

Actually I was in practice dropped the laptop and after a couple of hours, the screw was "pop", hung and the Windows stopped sure. I took out the screw, connected to a PC, and without any pre-checks first removed the image. Fortunately the screw gave all to count without any problems.
