New router to replace WL500gp

You need to find a decent alternative to the legendary Asus WL500gp. Highly desirable:
— Just as stable
— Support alternative firmware
— Support USB and various peripherals (3g modem, camera)

From optional, but nice:
— Gigabit network

Budget: up to 5K

Who that can advise?

You can put alternative firmware, but the native RouretOS quite functional, same linux
only here in configure Mikrotik still have a little more than 2 checkboxes in the web ui
for example: - pearl_Web commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:15
About 2 checkboxes in the UI and no one spoke. Mikrotik positioned as ultrabudgetary camera equipment, not for home segment.
Since the default mentions alternative firmware, I think, will master setting Mikrotik - columbu commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:18
maybe Yes and maybe and no mention about the alternative firmware does not mean that all of them (alternative firmware) rocket science. - pearl_Web commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:21

About Mikrotik: alternative firmware for them there, no additional apps. In principle.

To understand what Mikrotik and whether he's here first, imho it makes sense to play in VirtualBox'e with free one-day version of RouterOS for x86:

If everything is fine, then a piece of iron better than this:

I would recommend ASUS RT-N66U is a powerful router, gigabite, 2 range, with alternative firmware (my Tomato) supports a huge number of peripherals (now the Huawei E3276 modem for Yota works without problems). Yes, and it looks very cool.
Support N66 - pearl_Web commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:19

If WL500gp stopped working — a problem in the power supply, can be easily solved, there swells a capacitor, it must be replaced and will work many more years.
No, it works great. The condenser in the power unit already changed. Just need another router with similar qualities. - pearl_Web commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:21

ASUS rt-n66u already advised.
Another good option for a close price
As far as I know the router is no alternative firmware. - pearl_Web commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:23
Alternative firmware no for two reasons:
1) brand works quite sanity,
2) launch external applications supported out of the box: - columbu commented on October 3rd 19 at 03:26
