Recognition technology the images in the IKEA catalog

In the latest IKEA catalogue on some pages there is an inscription informing about the presence of additional interactive content.
While using the app "IKEA Catalog" application for iPhone or Android when you point your device at the page recognizes and appears things.

According to information found in the network is a product of METAIO and a specific application Creator and the augmented reality browser from the same vendor.

Recognition of a printed page is quite fast, and on the catalog page, no distinct marks, like QR codes or something similar.

Question: anyone familiar with the product METAIO Creator? And is there any assumptions on the algorithm of recognition?

The recognition algorithm is this: take any image, it searched for control points (for example by FAST and are described using SURF). Mutual reference points are generally different for different images. On the map these points into the database to set the desired URL.
