You're a little confused - PHP, RoR and other languages is a Back-End.

Frontend is JavaScript, Backbone.js, CoffeScript and other +not so long ago appeared Node.js that can weigh the entire Back-end UI and the Back-end to leave only the logic.

I would recommend to study Node.js his future seems rosy!

And, if the Back-end, then I would advise you to learn RoR or Python.
