How is auto attaching icons to words in articles?

Hello. How is the automatic adding of icons (small images) to certain words in articles, for example in the picture next to the names of the characters attached to their thumbnail:

(Need to know how is it called, that though as-that to Google).

This is most likely done with css, something like this.

When you publish a post or article some plugin scans the text and frame the names of the characters in a tag with the right css class.

Simple version:
Create the right classes... for Example, auto, fruit, money
Next, apply the styles to add the desired classes. Can I add an icon or use the font-awesome...
For example,
.money::before {
content: "/f000"; /* or image url */
color:red;
}

It remains then to add to the article a tag <span class="money">bla-bla</span>
Well, then you can add buttons into a text editor to create shortcodes etc
