How to create variables in html with gulp?

Guys, tell me is it possible using gulp to create variables in html files?
Ie: let's say I make up a multi-page website and want to find a certain page, the corresponding menu link was active.
In php it would look like this:

<a href="" class=" active ">About the company< /a>

On the page where I would set the value of the variable:
And as a consequence the link "About us" would be active.

That is, we need the ability to create and test variables, I don't know how else to explain it))
Is it possible in some similar way with php to do the same thing using gulp, but in files with the html extension? Maybe some plugin exists? Thanks in advance.
