How is support for modifications in the game when using LuaJIT?

The code of the game is partially enclosed in a native code and partially documented for the players.
Would it be possible players to make mods, which carry out a full injection (substitution Lua functions, tables, meta-tables) in the compiled code of the game? Are there any limitations compared to using the classic Lua library?
