What data users need to collect to make your counter for your website?

Hi experts!
Want to make your own counter for the site. Searched the Internet, found a lot of interesting, but I would like to *hear* your advice on how best to implement this? Which data except for the IP user to take? And where better to store session data in database or in file? Just ask the Council.

If you just play something on all your questions one answer: "whatever, do as you like".
If you want to carry out Analytics on this data in the file is not very convenient, but likely faster (to finish every visit to the end), but based on the other.
You can store the IP, time of visit, number of repeat visits (using cookies, for example), if there's authentication - store logins, etc.
