How to make a replacement part of the image?

Once saw somewhere such a thing. On the website there is an image if smoothly to use it as a cursor for example from right to left, it is replaced by others. i.e. in the part before the cursor the old image, after already new. How is this implemented? maybe there's some plugin? and how did this miracle called?
