SVN and encrypt traffic?

Do I understand correctly that when using a simple svnserve traffic is not encrypted (just compressed)? Logins-passwords are transmitted in plain text? If so, what scheme is SVN+SSH or SVN+SSL do you recommend? It is advisable that you have a portable client that supports this scheme.
